It was the belief of AUBMC Nursing Services in the importance of staff retention and recognition that led to the development of a Retention Program. The fundamental aim of this program, which was designed for practical use in today’s healthcare environment, with its fast pace and unpredictable situations, is to enable people to relieve stress and function with maximum effectiveness. Results have been both immediate and quantifiable.  Some of the features included in this program are: the establishment of a Retention Committee, and periodic staff satisfaction surveys to measure outcomes of the program. The bottom line is that employees feel that the hospital really cares about them.  Finally, a more satisfied and productive staff will improve patient care outcomes, reduce patient length of stay, and generate higher patient satisfaction scores. Several retention strategies are also established in the department with staff nurses involved in the decision making process.
